With Freedom Comes Great Sacrifice: Memorial Day 2026
Memorial Day, at its heart, is one of the most solemn observances in American life. It is a day set aside to remember the men and women who gave their lives for our nation and for the freedoms we often take for granted.
Across generations, Americans have answered the call to serve. From the fields of Gettysburg to the beaches of Normandy, from the mountains of Afghanistan to countless places known only to the families who lost someone there, brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces stood in defense of ideals greater than themselves. They were sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, neighbors, classmates, and friends. Many were young, with dreams still unfolding, yet they accepted the burden of service knowing there was a possibility they might never come home.
Memorial Day asks us to pause and remember the cost of liberty.
With freedom comes great sacrifice. Every right we enjoy — the freedom to speak openly, worship freely, vote, pursue opportunity, and live under self-government — has been protected by individuals willing to place themselves in harm’s way for others. Our hearts are forever indebted to the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Empty seats at dinner tables, folded flags, birthdays missed, and futures forever altered are part of the true story of American freedom.
For many families, Memorial Day is painfully real: the mother who still keeps her child’s photograph close by, the spouse who carries both pride and heartbreak, and the veteran who remembers the brothers and sisters who never made it home. Behind every name etched into stone is a story of courage, service, and love of country.
Memorial Day also reminds us that patriotism is measured in responsibility. The best way to honor the fallen is to strive to be worthy of their sacrifice — by strengthening our communities, serving one another, protecting liberty, and preserving the principles that make the United States of America worth defending.
In cemeteries across the nation this weekend, small American flags will wave gently beside rows of white headstones. Some graves will receive visitors. Others may stand quietly alone. None, however, should be forgotten. The debt owed to those who gave their lives for our nation can never truly be repaid, but it must always be remembered.
As we gather this Memorial Day, may we do so with gratitude and humility. May we teach the next generation not only the history of the holiday but its meaning. And may we never lose sight of the extraordinary courage of the men and women who laid down their lives so that others may live free.
Their sacrifice endures in every freedom we have the privilege to enjoy, and their memory deserves our everlasting honor.
